AWA celebrates the 20th anniversary of the serialization of ONE PIECE with a dream collaboration

Beginning Monday, June 26th, 2017, AWA will be launching a collaboration with “ONE PIECE”, the definitive example of Japan's shonen manga genre. AWA will roll out a variety of projects in collaboration with ONE PIECE magazine, a long-form magazine that commemorates the 20th anniversary of ONE PIECE's serialization.

ONE PIECE magazine is a long-form magazine (known in Japan as a "mook," a portmanteau of "magazine" and "book") that commemorates the 20th anniversary of “ONE PIECE”'s serialization. It is set to be published over three consecutive months, beginning with Vol.1 on Friday, July 7th, 2017. In addition to brand new illustrations from Mr. Eiichiro Oda, the original author of ONE PIECE, the magazine will be packed with features that are sure to delight fans, including a long-form interview with Mr. Oda, as well as the serialization of ONE PIECE novel〝A〟, a novel that depicts half of the life story of Luffy's brother Ace.

As AWA launches this collaboration, a special website entitled ONE PIECE magazine meets AWA will be opened to the public on Monday, June 26, 2017. Additionally, a music list created by Mr. Oda, which will be published in the magazine, will also be released as an AWA playlist. This music list and playlist are put together by Mr. Oda himself, and consist of a large number of songs that the author has listened to in order to feed his imagination while writing. The playlist is scheduled to be released in three stages, coinciding with the three volumes of ONE PIECE magazine, which are to be released on: Friday, July 7th; Friday, August 4th; and Friday, September 1st, 2017.

Additionally, on the special ONE PIECE magazine meets AWA site, users will be able to create playlists with unique designs, using panels from “ONE PIECE”. Playlists that are released to the public will also be placed in a random drawing to win a special-edition poster that brings together the full-color opening illustrations drawn by Mr. Eiichiro Oda for ONE PIECE magazine.

HAYAMIMI Project Announcing a second curator and a favorite of Shinichi Osawa, Licaxxx!

On Thursday, April 20, 2017, along with the release of the HAYAMIMI Project's sixth playlist, "HAYAMIMI #006", a second curator was announced: the new-generation multi-field artist "Licaxxx".

A project started in December 2016 by AWA, HAYAMIMI aims to deliver early recommendations of new, relatively-unknown music and music from new artists using the AWA playlist functionality, acting as a "compass" to guide users to great new music in a music scene where an endless number of songs are released each day. In Japanese, the first part of HAYAMIMI, "haya," is meant to convey a sense not only of "early" ("hayai"), but also "hot" and "popular" (hayari). Music producer Shinichi Osawa, the originator of the HAYAMIMI project, is also its first curator, responsible for creating and maintaining playlists. In addition, starting with the sixth playlist, "HAYAMIMI #6", announced today, the new-generation multi-field artist "Licaxxx", who, in addition to a main role as DJ, is also active in many roles, from beat maker to editor, writer and radio personality, now joins as a second curator.

Both "Licaxxx" and Osawa are enthusiastic about the collaboration.
"We are going to be introducing the music and titles of new songs that are born each day all over the world," says (Licaxxx). "I'd like to deliver playlists that will add new color to each and every season." According to Osawa, "It's hard to admit it, but the younger generation has a certain sensitivity and sensibility. Just as our bodies are formed based on the kind of food we eat, I think our knowledge and feelings are also affected by what we absorb from day to day. I'm looking forward to having Licaxxx, a member of the music world in her 20s who certainly combines a high level of sensitivity with this ability to absorb, share her aesthetic sense (ear) with us on AWA."

Great things are surely in store for AWA's HAYAMIMI Project.

AWA Added to List of Services for Users of BIGLOBE SIM's "Entame-Free Option." ~¥480/Month Service Eliminates AWA Data Fees~

As of March 27th, 2017, our service has been added to the list of services available from the "Entame-Free Option" offered by BIGLOBE Inc. (Main Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Takeshi Ariizumi, hereafter: "BIGLOBE").

The "Entame-Free Option" is an option available for users of the high-speed mobile communication service "BIGLOBE SIM" which allows for the unlimited streaming of a variety of video and music on their smartphones for a set monthly rate starting at ¥480. With AWA's addition to this list of services, users registered for the "Entame-Free Option" with their BIGLOBE SIM will be able to use the AWA service with no mobile data fees. The user will be able to listen to all of the music available on AWA, as well as make use of other options such as playlist creation, without having to worry about data usage*.

AWA has enacted a number of other methods in the past to help cut down on data usage, including offline playback and stream quality selection (High 128kbps/Normal 96kbps/Low 64kbps), which allows our users to not have to worry about their data. We hope to use this most recent initiative as a chance to continue to work with other services and expand our functionality in order to further provide a service which can be enjoyed anywhere at any time without the need to worry about data usage.

* Users registered for both BIGLOBE's "Entame-Free Option" and AWA's Standard Plan will incur the regular monthly fee of ¥960.

AWA and McDonald's Collaboration New songs by GENERATIONS and THE RAMPAGE to be provided in advance exclusively through McDonald's FREE Wi-Fi introduced to approximately 1,800 restaurants nationwide

From March 29th, 2017, AWA will be cooperating with McDonald's Japan (head office: Shinjuku, Tokyo, managing director and CEO: Sarah L. Casanova) to provide special content through the McDonald's FREE Wi-Fi introduced to approximately 1,800 restaurants nationwide.

With this campaign, anyone connecting to the FREE Wi-Fi service in McDonald's restaurants can listen to special content provided by AWA. The first time around, customers will be provided the exclusive opportunity to listen in advance to "Sun and Moon" (release date: April 12th, 2017) by dance and vocal group "GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE" (hereinafter GENERATIONS), and "FRONTIERS" (release date: April 19th, 2017) by "THE RAMPAGE from EXILE TRIBE" (hereinafter THE RAMPAGE). Those signed on to AWA's standard plan and those in the middle of the trial period can listen to the full versions of the tracks, and users of the free plan can listen to the 90 second versions. This initiative by AWA and McDonald's is the only initiative providing an opportunity to listen to the tracks before their release.

Comments have been contributed by members of both groups: "There was a lot we could sympathize with, and we were impressed by the excellent lyrics created by Mr. Odake continuing on from his previous work. With our last work we had lyrics on the theme of love on top of a danceable track, and this was a new expression for GENERATIONS. While this work is an extension of that, I feel it's also a track drawn from a different viewpoint." (GENERATIONS/Katayose Ryota) "I think it's the kind of track where, instead of just following the lyrics with your eyes, when you listen to the track the lyrics naturally find their way to you. I hope people will listen without thinking too hard about it and experience this track where we're singing and comparing love to the sun and the moon, and that they'll listen to it when they're down and it will get them fired up again." (GENERATIONS/Nakatsuka Yuta) "Before the hook there's the phrase, 'now break through the wall,' and we really put our hearts and souls into singing it, so please give it your attention and have a listen. If you connect to McDonald's exclusive Wi-Fi you can listen to it a little earlier, so please check it out!" (THE RAMPAGE/Yoshino Hokuto).

As well as the newest tracks from GENERATIONS and THE RAMPAGE, there are also plans to serially update exclusive McDonald's playlists, and to develop initiatives that allow customers to listen to music while at McDonald's and enjoy their time there even more, such as playlists running alongside McDonald's limited time products, and playlists with music for children.

In terms of accessing these features, anyone who downloads the AWA app onto a smartphone or tablet device and connects to the Wi-Fi at any of the approximately 1,800 restaurants with McDonald's FREE Wi-Fi will be able to listen for free.*

*The 90 second versions of the tracks can be listened to for free.

Also, the team which wins the "AWA Special Award" will receive a prize pack of AWA original goods.

The API which AWA will be providing at this hackathon is the same as that which is to be used with the "HEOS by Denon" wireless audio system, which was released on March 15th (Wed) (support for AWA will begin on May 24th (Wed)). This will be the first time since the service's inception that it has been provided for anything other than corporate use and is to be made specially available for the participants of this hackathon before its public release.

Wireless Audio System "HEOS by Denon" to Support AWA. Japan's first-ever Wi-Fi speakers with AWA built-in going on sale.

We have provided the audio brand Denon with AWA's music streaming API.

This means that the "HEOS by Denon" brand of wireless audio systems, to be released by Denon today on March 15th, will add support for AWA on May 24th, 2017. By selecting an AWA playlist or track from the HEOS app, it will be possible to stream music from the HEOS device. Because music data is directly streamed from the AWA server to the HEOS device, there is no need to worry about using up the battery of your smartphone or tablet.

Comment from AWA's company director, Tetsutaro Ono, from the March 14th, 2017 "HEOS by Denon" Press Release

"Upon analyzing the activity of AWA users, we found that the amount of time spent using the service on holidays is increasing. With our prediction that "home entertainment" will continue to become more and more important in the future, we are happy to welcome this collaboration with D&M Holdings Inc. This will be AWA's first time ever offering up our API and we would like to use this collaboration as a chance to actively work towards providing support for new devices as well."

"HAYAMIMI" Project to Become Regular Feature

Coinciding with the February 9th, 2017 (Thu.) release of "HAYAMIMI #4", the fourth playlist for the "HAYAMIMI" project, AWA has decided to make the project a regular feature going forward.

AWA launched the HAYAMIMI project in December 2016. The project aims to be the first to spotlight exciting new music and artists that have yet to gain much recognition, with the use of AWA's playlist feature.
Amid a music scene in which countless pieces of music are released every day, HAYAMIM seeks to be the "compass" that guides users to encounters with new music. The project's name carries the dual meanings of the Japanese words "hayai" ("early") and "hayari" ("in style").
Music producer Shinichi Osawa, originator of the HAYAMIMI project, has been appointed the first curator for the project, to select the songs and oversee the playlists. "HAYAMIMI #4", released today as the fourth playlist, features up-and-coming artists who are little known in Japan, and songs that are one step ahead of the global music scene.

Additionally, as the three playlists released prior to this have received great reviews, this project will be made a regular feature in the near future. It will be presented on AWA's "BROWSING" page. New HAYAMIMI curators will also be added, across genres and generations. Please look forward to more from the HAYAMIMI project.

Begins Provision of Their Embed Player, Enabling Playback of Music in the AWA Library on Web Pages

"Embed Player" became available starting from February 2, 2017 (Thur.).

This new Embed Player enables users to paste an "Embed Code" for music streamed through the AWA service into a web page to display a music player on their homepage, blog, or other site. The Embed Code can correspond to a song, album, artist, or playlist, so the user can decide what content they want to display. This also enables visitors to the site to hear a sample of the music on that page for 30 seconds without having to download AWA.

Through this new functionality, AWA hopes to provide users with the ability to share not just their favorite artists and music but also their own unique playlists with even more people, as well as the ability for artists, producers, and music labels to use the platform as a promotional tool.

Embed Player is already in use by music producer Tetsuya Komuro, producer and DJ Shinichi Osawa who is currently working on the HAYAMIMI project, singer-songwriter ohashiTrio, Korean idol group SUPER JUNIOR-KYUHYUN, and others on their official homepages to promote their playlists and songs.

For instructions on how to use the Embed Player, please refer to the following help article.
